The most common questions in April are related to the control of annual weeds and grass in the lawn and ornamental landscape areas. If you are using products with “Balan,” “Treflan” (Preen), or the combination called “Team,” it should be on your lawn or bed by mid-April and no later than the first of May. This must be applied before the target weed germinates.

There is also a newer product called “Dimension,” available with or without fertilizer. This product provides superior control of crabgrass and many other annual grass and broadleaf weeds in ornamental landscape areas and established lawns. The big deal is that it can be applied up to four weeks later than the other products.

I never used to recommend lawn food plus crabgrass control-type product, mainly because with the “older” products the timing of the weed control application was not compatible with the proper time to feed the lawn. Times are a-changing—I can now recommend “Professional Use Weed-Out Lawn Fertilizer Plus Crabgrass Preventer” for weeding and feeding.
