Hummingbirds

We carry a full line of hummingbird feeders as well as nyger seed (by the pound). Below are some tips on attracting hummingbirds to your yard from our friend, Belinda Abendschein.

ATTRACTING HUMMINGBIRDS TO YOUR GARDEN

“Adopt of the pace of nature…patience is her virtue”   - Emerson

•   The ruby-throated hummingbird is the only hummingbird native to Wisconsin.
•
Males have a brilliant iridescent red throat that looks dark when it’s not in good light.
•    Their habitat includes open woodlands, forest edges, meadows, grasslands, as well as parks, gardens, and backyards.
•    Male Ruby-throated hummingbirds don’t stick around long. Pairs are together long enough for courtship and mating – just a matter of days to weeks. Then he’s off on his own, and may begin migration by early August.
•    Hummingbirds can be attracted with a nectar feeder, as well as with planting tubular flowers.
•
Historically, hummingbirds begin to appear in Southeastern Wisconsin around Mother’s Day, but be prepared for early arrivals in mid to late April.
•
Change nectar every few days and keep feeders clean.  This is important, as sugar water can ferment into alcohol!!!  Having a clean feeder when they arrive is crucial to being successful!
•
While they are attracted to the color red, it is not necessary to use red nectar in the feeder.
•    The female hummingbirds are often seen hovering in the eaves and roof overhangs of houses, where they are probably collecting spider webs to weave their nests.

•    The tiny lichen covered nests usually contain two eggs, and may be located in hardwoods or evergreens from three to sixty feet from the ground.
•    Fledging usually occurs about three weeks after hatch date.
•    Since this whole process takes up to six weeks, double-brooding isn't likely in the northernmost part of the Ruby-throated Hummingbird's range.
•    Male Ruby-throats are extremely territorial and will vigorously defend food/nectar sources.
•    Ruby-throats migrate each fall to Central America, with a few remaining in the Gulf Coast area.

•    The oldest known Ruby-throated Hummingbird was 9 years 1 month old.
