Growing Edibles in Containers

Picture
Growing in containers is the perfect solution when space or sun is limited or you want to grow something that is easy to maintain.  Edibles offer their own visual appeal and can be just as pretty as flowers in containers. Here are a few things to consider:
  • The container must have drainage holes (drill them if needed).
  • Use fresh potting soil, not soil from your garden.
  • Use compact varieties.
  • Plants in containers dry out more quickly than plants in the ground. Moniter them daily and consider setting up a drip irrigation watering system that could run on a timer.
  • Fertilize regularly.
  • Most edibles (especially tomatoes) do best in containers with a 14” diameter (minimum).

Edibles that grow well in containers include:

* lettuce and other salad greens
* kale
* swiss chard
* herbs
* strawberries
* tomatoes (determinate varieties)
* cucumbers (bush or container varieties)
* peppers
* potatoes
* peas (short-vining varieties)

Earth Boxes are the ideal container gardens for growing your food. They are fool-proof and easy.  Taller plants like tomatoes will need a staking system. The Earth Box comes with castors making it easy to move. Watch for our 'How to Plant an Earth Box' video coming soon. For now, here is a simple diagram and photo:

Container gardening offers endless possibilities when it comes to growing edibles. If you are just starting out, try growing leaf lettuce or herbs  in a 14" garden bowl. Experiment and try something new every year.
